Think your bookshelf is for books only, think again!
Adding instant personality to any room, your bookshelf tells a story all of its own and can be styled with various items that you choose to showcase – whether it be collectives from your travels, your favourite photo or art print, knick-knacks from your Nan or a small indoor plant. Getting the look just right though isn’t always that easy, however the below tips will ensure you have a photo-worthy look in no time. Books – Depending on the size of your shelf or bookshelf, you may choose to exhibit many books or just a few.
If like me, you have numerous books, try displaying only the ones you really love to ensure you are left with enough room to display other objects. For a less formal appearance, mix up the placement of your books by arranging some horizontally and others vertically. Your horizontally stacked books can then act as a platform for your bits and pieces to sit, creating small vignettes on each level. Keep It Neat – Bookcases and shelves can easily appear junky if too many items are squeezed onto each shelf. Make sure your bookcase remains clutter free and remove any unwanted objects.
Balance – The key to a visually appealing bookshelf or shelf is to ensure it is well balanced. When styling your bookshelf, be sure to step away intermittently to check that books and objects are evenly spaced or you will unknowingly end up with your belongings steeped to one side. Without being too obsessive, you may choose to create consistency by using similar colours throughout your bookshelf or alternatively group similar shades together on each shelf.
Plants & Flowers – My indoor plant quota has probably hit its limit turning our home into a jungle!! But if yours hasn’t, add vibrancy to your bookshelf by introducing a small vase with fresh flowers or an indoor plant. Creepers, such as Silverfalls and Chain of Hearts, in particular work well and will drape effortlessly down your shelf adding visual interest.
